Overview
This was a four-day Sierra route with a clear structure:
- Day 1: quick Yosemite visit and a first drive over Tioga Pass
- Day 2: ride the Mammoth Gran Fondo and finish 70 miles
- Day 3: slow Mammoth-area day with Convict Lake and hot spring landscapes
- Day 4: return day delayed by Tioga Pass hours, so we wandered near Mono Lake until the road opened after 4 PM
Day 1 | Quick Yosemite Stops And First Tioga Pass Drive
The first day started with classic Yosemite views. It was a quick pass through, but the scenery was still reliable.
We kept the pace easy. The kids played by the river, and the whole day felt loose rather than rushed.
This was also our first time driving Tioga Pass, and the views absolutely justified the route.
Day 2 | Mammoth Gran Fondo 70 Miles
Day 2 was the main event: Mammoth Gran Fondo. We gathered at the start in the morning, felt good, and had cooperative weather.
The 70 miles went more smoothly than expected. Finishing felt great.
That evening we ate with family and refueled properly, which was the perfect close to the ride day.
Day 3 | Around Mammoth: Convict Lake And Hot Springs
Day 3 switched to leisure mode. We wandered around the Mammoth area and started with Convict Lake, where the water and mountains looked clean from every angle.
Later we visited the hot spring area. The landforms and colors had a layered look, very different from the forest and lake scenes before it.
Day 4 | Tioga Pass Timing Got Us, So We Waited At Mono Lake
On the final day, we planned to drive straight back through Tioga Pass. Instead, the road hours blocked us, so we had to wait nearby.
Since we were already there, we turned it into a quick Mono Lake stop.
The road finally opened after 4 PM, and we continued home. The delay was annoying, but it also gave us an unplanned Mono Lake section.
Takeaways
- Yosemite plus Mammoth has very high scenery density.
- Finishing the 70-mile Gran Fondo felt great and is worth doing again.
- Convict Lake and the hot spring area are good slower stops.
- Always check Tioga Pass same-day access hours, or it can seriously change your return plan.
