Overview
This was a road trip with our friends' family to Grand Teton + Yellowstone, about 2,500 miles round trip. The full trip took 9 days: 4 days on the road and 5 days actually exploring the parks.
Short version:
- Wildlife density was high, with close views of bear, elk, and bison.
- Yellowstone has so many geysers that fatigue is real, but Old Faithful and Morning Glory Pool still deserve the visit.
- Grand Teton's mountains, rivers, and lakes photograph beautifully.
- Food had both surprises and misses, so I wrote those down too.
Day 1 | First Look At Teton: Mountains, River, And Lake Together
The first day focused on scenery in Grand Teton. The pace was light, and the main goal was to take in the landscape.
We got one of my favorite combinations of the whole trip: mountains, river, and lake in the same frame. Weather and light were both on our side, making this a strong opening.
Day 2 | Jenny Lake, Cascade Canyon, And A Bear Up Close
On the second day, we saw a bear around Jenny Lake, which was genuinely impressive in person. After that we took the boat in the lake area and hiked part of Cascade Canyon. It was not too hard, and the scenery was very worth it.
This day combined wildlife watching and light hiking, which made the experience feel complete.
Day 3 | Into Yellowstone: Elk, Bison, And The Grand Canyon Of Yellowstone
The third day moved from Grand Teton toward Yellowstone. On the way we saw elk and bison. Once inside Yellowstone, the focus was the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, where both the water volume and geology felt powerful.
For a first Yellowstone visit, this day makes the landscape shift obvious: from Teton's clean mountain-and-lake lines into Yellowstone's stronger geothermal and canyon world.
Day 4 | Geyser-Heavy Day: Morning Glory, Grand Prismatic, Old Faithful
Day 4 was the high-density geothermal day. The main stops were:
- Morning Glory Pool
- Grand Prismatic Spring
- Old Faithful
Honestly, after seeing many geysers and hot springs, visual fatigue sets in. But these classic Yellowstone stops are still worth seeing in person.
Day 5 | Return Through Jackson Hole
On the return day, we stopped in Jackson Hole, visited the antler park, and got a popular coffee. It worked well as a relaxed closing day.
Honest Food Notes
- Canyon Village Cafe Asian food: miss, not recommended.
- Old Faithful Lodge Cafe Indian food: pretty good, worth considering.
- I heard West Yellowstone has Chinese food, but we did not try it this time.
- On the return through Jackson, we had Chinese food at the "antler restaurant" and ordered bison. It felt like a bison version of broccoli beef, and it was okay.
- Back in Davis, Yang Kee Dumpling was good for xiao long bao and sheng jian bao.
Suggestions For Grand Teton + Yellowstone
- If 4 of 9 days are road days, the park schedule still feels tight. Add 1-2 more park days if possible.
- Wildlife depends on luck. Start early and watch around dusk for better chances.
- In geothermal areas, pick the key stops. Otherwise visual fatigue is real.
- Research food ahead to avoid more misses, because in-park dining quality varies.
- Jackson works well as a return-trip reset stop.
Final Thoughts
This was a classic and satisfying western national parks road trip:
- Grand Teton provided the calm mountain-and-water scenery.
- Yellowstone delivered the "Earth is alive" scale.
- Wildlife, geothermal areas, canyon, and lake scenery were all included.
If I repeat the trip, I would give Yellowstone more full days, drive less, and look more slowly.
