On Halloween night we went trick-or-treating at the Jobs family home in Palo Alto. In one line: both the candy and the decorations go all out. The whole yard was turned into a futuristic robot factory called Robo Industries Inc., with live performers, fog and stage lighting, and the candy bag we left with had a full 180 g chocolate bar in it.

Trip Overview

  • When: the evening of October 31. Our photos run from 7:24 to 8:13 pm, and walking through the display took about fifteen minutes.
  • Where: the Old Palo Alto neighborhood, a regular residential street you walk in and out of.
  • Theme: Robo Industries Inc., a robot factory, plus an Innovation Lab and a REBOOT: 2076 product-launch stage.

Robo Industries: A Robot Factory

The first thing you see is the facade of a whole "factory building": a big ROBO INDUSTRIES INC sign, brick chimneys, glass windows, and a glowing antenna tower on top. Robots stand on the upstairs balcony and the trees are lit red, so the mood is set right away.

Innovation Lab: Robots In The Window

One side of the building is the big Innovation Lab window. Inside is a half-assembled robot surrounded by cables and parts, as if it were still "in production" in the lab.

Live Performers And Robots

The yard isn't just props. There were plenty of costumed performers: a robot with a glowing chest waving at people walking by, a "company employee" in a suit standing by the sign, and a "worker" in coveralls guarding a glass pod.

The Smoking Capsule

Further in is a huge cylindrical capsule with rings of red lights and fog pouring out of the top. An "engineer" in an orange suit works the control panel beside it, as if a new robot is about to be "booted up". This was the most crowded spot, with everyone waiting for the fog-and-light moment to take a photo.

The REBOOT: 2076 Launch Stage

The liveliest part was the REBOOT: 2076 stage. Its banner reads "Introducing the all new Galaxy line", like a product launch from the future. Performers danced on stage under a disco ball, lasers and fog. A "launch event" in the Jobs family's front yard is a fun nod.

The Last Counter

The last stretch is a row of black counters against a wall of starry lights, with robot figures sitting behind them. Everyone had their phones out.

The Candy: Truly Generous

When we opened the candy bag at home, "generous" turned out to be an understatement:

  • The bag itself is a burlap drawstring bag printed with a castle, bats and a witch, good enough to reuse.
  • A full Tony's Chocolonely caramel sea salt milk chocolate bar (180 g), wrapped in a custom Happy Halloween sleeve.
  • Two small packs of Jelly Belly assorted flavors.
  • A mango Hi-Chew stick.
  • Two Dum Dums lollipops and a small hard candy.

Most houses hand out one or two small candies. This was a whole bag, and the chocolate bar alone will last the kids several days.

Practical Tips

  • Crowds: this house is well known for its display, and it gets busy after dark. Go early if you want clearer photos.
  • Parking: it's a residential neighborhood. Park a bit further away and walk in, and don't block neighbors' driveways.
  • Photos: the yard is dark and the lighting changes quickly, so phone night mode blurs easily. Hold steady and take several shots, or just shoot video.
  • Etiquette: it's a private home. Follow the flow of people, and stay within the display.

Takeaways

  • The display tells a full story: factory building, lab, capsule, then the REBOOT: 2076 launch. Walking through feels like a small immersive show.
  • The live performers make the yard come alive, and kids find it far more fun than static pumpkins and skeletons.
  • The candy really is generous: a burlap bag plus a full 180 g Tony's Chocolonely bar made this the best stop of the night.
  • Crowds are a given. Go early, take your time and take plenty of photos, and it's a much better experience.
