The Huntington Library and Gardens 2026 | A Day Through Japanese, Chinese, And Rose Gardens

Overview

This was a day trip to The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, just outside Los Angeles. The grounds are huge — the Rose Garden, Japanese Garden, Liu Fang Yuan (Chinese Garden), and the bamboo path each have a completely different character, so the day felt packed but rewarding.

We started with the art collections inside the mansion, moved through the Rose Garden, the lily ponds, and the Japanese Garden, then saved the best part — Liu Fang Yuan — for a slow afternoon walk, capping the day off with a stop at the gift shop.

Right inside the mansion, the European-style hall has massive tapestries on the walls, a crystal chandelier, and antique furniture — full of history and worth taking your time with.

The Rose Garden was in full bloom, with orange-red roses climbing the trellis — leaning in for a smell was the must-do moment here.

By the lily pond, we ran into a turtle sunning itself while the water lilies were in full bloom, perfect for an overhead shot.

Japanese Garden | Pines, Koi Pond, And A Zen Courtyard

The old pine in the Japanese Garden has a very Zen shape, and the koi pond right beneath it made for a peaceful scene with great light.

Deeper in the garden, there's a white-walled courtyard where a shaped pine leans out over the wall — a very clean, striking frame.

Liu Fang Yuan | The Most Stunning Stop Of The Day

Liu Fang Yuan, the Chinese Garden, was the single most photogenic stop at the Huntington — the moon gate frames the pavilion and lake perfectly no matter how you shoot it.

The pavilion across the lake reflects beautifully on the water, and the willows and Lake Tai rock formations capture the feel of a classical Jiangnan garden really well.

There was also a calligraphy activity set up in the garden, with brushes and ink stones on a table — a fun hands-on way to leave your mark.

Leaving Liu Fang Yuan, we passed through a bamboo path where tall stalks blocked out the sun overhead — refreshingly cool to walk through.

Gift Shop Finale

After a full day of gardens, we ended with a stop at the gift shop — the giant plush toys were impossible to resist and made for a relaxed way to close out the day.
