Maui 2025 | Six Days With Family

Overview

This was a six-day family trip to Maui. The overall pace was slow, and we split the stay between two areas:

• First 3 days in Kaanapali on the west side
• Last 3 days in Kihei on the south side
• Activities included snorkeling, a partial Road to Hana, Haleakala sunset, and Iao Valley

Day 1 | Transfer To Maui And Check In At Kaanapali

We flew Alaska Airlines to Maui with a connection in Portland. I was originally worried that a one-hour connection would be too tight, but the airport was small and the route was clear. As long as the first flight is not delayed, it works.

We checked into OUTRIGGER Ka'anapali Beach Resort. For the Kaanapali hotel area, it felt like a good value with relatively new facilities. Costs were roughly:

• Resort fee: $50+ per day
• Parking: $20+ per day

Service and location were both good. The one small downside was that the pool felt cold.

Day 2 | Black Rock Snorkeling And Kapalua

Black Rock was within walking distance of the hotel. We rented beach chairs, an umbrella, and life floaties from Auntie Snorkel Shop. Prices were reasonable and the choices were good.

The day looked like this:

• Morning: snorkeling at Black Rock
• Afternoon: Kapalua Coastal Trail and Dragon Teeth

Kapalua Coastal Trail is about 4 miles. The coast is volcanic rock with fewer sandy beach sections, and there were more small bugs on the trail than expected. The scenery was fine, but if time is tight, I would shorten it based on interest.

Day 3 | Nakalele Blowhole And Move To Kihei

We snorkeled again in the morning and visited Nakalele Blowhole in the afternoon.

The original plan included Lahaina, but that turned out to be based on old guide information. After the 2023 wildfire, Lahaina was still rebuilding, and the area available for casual visiting was limited.

Then we moved to Maui Coast Hotel in Kihei. Compared with the first hotel:

• Room facilities were a bit older
• Service was very good and responsive
• Pool and bar were available, with a nice mood
• Resort fee was about $40+ per day
• Parking was about $20+ per day

Kihei's public beaches felt flatter and easier for casual water play.

Day 4 | Road To Hana, Halfway Version

The original plan was to drive all the way to Hana, but we ended up doing Halfway to Hana. It was still worth it.

Before leaving, I would recommend:

• Fill the gas tank first
• Use the restroom before the drive, since facilities are not dense along the route
• Prepare ahead if anyone gets carsick

Our stops included:

• Ho'okipa Beach Park for sea turtles
• Waikamoi Nature Trail, about 0.8 miles and easy
• Garden of Eden, paid but dense with scenery
• Keanae Lookout for volcanic coastline
• Halfway to Hana stand

On the way back through Paia, we tried to walk in at Mama's Fish House without a reservation but could not get in. We switched to Paia Fish Market, which was fine.

Day 5 | Haleakala Sunset Day

We left Kihei around 2 PM for Haleakala. In October, sunset is around 6 PM, so this departure time worked well.

The lower part of the drive had heavy fog, but it cleared as we got closer to the top. We mainly stopped at:

• Headquarters Visitor Center
• Leleiwi Overlook, very photogenic
• Kalahaku Overlook
• Haleakala Visitor Center, where parking was tight

The walk from the Visitor Center to the summit is about 0.5 miles, but the grade and elevation make it feel harder than the distance suggests. The clouds blocked the perfect crater panorama, but the sunset was still worth it.

Day 6 | Iao Valley And The Return Flight

Our return flight was a red-eye, so we used the daytime for Iao Valley State Monument, which requires a reservation.

Cost notes from the original trip:

• Reservation / ticket: about $5 per person
• Parking: about $10

The route is short, about 1 mile, easy to walk, and feels like a tropical valley trail. We also stopped at Kepaniwai Park, which includes Sun Yat-sen memorial-related content. Before returning the car, we did grocery and supply stops at Times Market, Safeway, and Costco near the airport.

Practical Notes From This Trip

1. Splitting the stay between two areas was the right call: Kaanapali for resort mood, Kihei for supplies and flexible driving.
2. Road to Hana does not have to be all-or-nothing; the halfway version still gives a lot of scenery.
3. Haleakala sunset needs enough drive time and the right expectation: clear below does not mean clear above.
4. Lahaina guidance needs to be current after the 2023 fire.
5. A connection is manageable if the first flight is on time.

Final Thoughts

Maui is slow in the best way. The roads, coast, and beaches all work well for family travel. Even though not every stop went exactly as planned, the trip still had high return.

If we visit Maui again, I would consider:

1. A direct flight if possible, to reduce connection fatigue.
2. Staying in one hotel longer and moving less.
3. Adding one day for cycling or a slower coastal exploration.
