This was a standard and very comfortable coastal day: start in Monterey, follow 17-Mile Drive through Spanish Bay, Bird Rock, and Lone Cypress, then finish with a slow walk in Carmel-by-the-Sea. The best part was the weather. The sky was deeply blue, and the ocean looked bright all day.

Day 1 | Monterey: Start With The Waterfront

The first stop was Monterey. On a clear day, this area does not need many tasks. Stand by the waterfront railing, walk near the wharf, and the trip already feels started.

This part was more of a warm-up. Since we still had 17-Mile Drive ahead, there was no need to use too much energy here.

Day 1 | Spanish Bay: Blue Sky And White Sand

After entering 17-Mile Drive, Spanish Bay made a great first coast stop. The beach is wide, the wave line is long, and on a sunny day the blues looked very clean.

This is the place to slow down. Sit for a while, watch the waves, and let the whole day loosen up.

Day 1 | Bird Rock To Lone Cypress: The Core Of 17-Mile Drive

Around Bird Rock, the scene starts to feel more distinctly like 17-Mile Drive: waves, rocks, and birds in the distance. A short viewpoint stop is enough to make it worthwhile, and the telescope is fun for kids.

Lone Cypress is the classic stop on this route. Seeing it standing alone on the rock really does give it that iconic, steady, recognizable posture.

Day 1 | Carmel-by-the-Sea: Slow Town Walk

After the coast, Carmel-by-the-Sea changed the pace into a small-town walk. The best part is not one specific store, but the scale of the streets: blue window frames, stone walls, wood doors, and narrow lanes.

We walked, looked into shops, and stopped for cute windows, sculptures, and the hat store. After spending the first half of the day looking at the ocean, ending on lived-in town streets felt right.

Transportation And Parking

17-Mile Drive works best as a slow scenic drive following the official map. Viewpoints are close enough that you can stop whenever a scene catches your eye. The original trip note recorded the Pebble Beach official page listing a $12.50 per vehicle entrance fee at the time of writing, with public access from sunrise to sunset and no motorcycles allowed. Check the official page or on-site signs before leaving because fees and rules can change.

If you only want Spanish Bay Beach, you can also approach from Sunset Drive in Pacific Grove. California Beaches notes free parking along Sunset Drive and warns that the water is cold with strong rip currents, so it is not a casual swimming beach.

Bird Rock is an easy family stop. California Coastal Trail lists parking, restrooms, viewing, and a telescope.
