Logistics

  • Stayed in Kings Beach the night before, making the north shore start easier in the morning.
  • South Lake Tahoe can work as a mid-ride supply point; plan water and calories ahead.
  • Heart rate rises more easily at altitude, so do not force a flatland pace early.

Notes

  • Emerald Bay was the most memorable climb and photo stop of the day.
  • Cooler weather helped a lot, but lake wind and rolling climbs still add up.
  • If repeated, add one more day for a recovery ride or easy lake activity.

Ride Summary

This was a very clear bucket-list ride: go to Lake Tahoe for the weekend and complete the full loop. The ride started from Kings Beach and returned to the north shore, with Strava recording 74.5 mi / 3,688 ft / 5h05m.

Altitude makes the ride harder than a flatland version of the same distance. Heart rate climbs quickly, and every rolling section feels more present. Luckily the temperature was comfortable, so the rhythm stayed manageable.

Route

The route is the Lake Tahoe loop. Starting from the north shore, it follows the lake, uses South Lake Tahoe as a supply area, and gets its strongest scenery and climbing memory around Emerald Bay.

The challenge is not one single steep climb. It is the combination of distance, altitude, and continuous rolling terrain. Hold back in the first half so there is enough left for the climbs and lake wind later.

Logistics

  • Lodging: stayed in a Kings Beach Airbnb the night before to start directly from the north shore.
  • Supplies: South Lake Tahoe is a key refill point; do not wait until hunger hits.
  • Pacing: altitude makes effort feel sharper, so keep the first half conservative.
  • Photos: Emerald Bay is worth stopping for, but a long stop can break the ride rhythm.

Notes

Most of the group finished smoothly, and the ride felt substantial. Lake Tahoe works well as a weekend cycling goal, but the more comfortable version is to stay one extra day and separate the ride from recovery.

Day 2 was mostly packing and returning home. After finishing, the feeling was simple: this route is worth it, but do not underestimate altitude.
